Our Mission at Dark Peak Detection Dogs
Career Change Dogs
Every dog entering Dark Peak’s assessment and development programme is carefully evaluated for suitability for an operational detection role. Not every dog will meet the specific requirements of this work, but that does not mean they are unsuitable for a rewarding future elsewhere.
Dogs may be withdrawn from the programme for a variety of reasons, including insufficient search drive, environmental sensitivity, medical considerations or simply because their individual temperament is better suited to a different lifestyle or type of work.
When this happens, our priority is finding the most appropriate alternative placement for that individual dog. This could include an assistance or therapy programme, sporting or scentwork home, another suitable working discipline, or an experienced non-operational home able to meet the dog’s needs.
All career change dogs are individually assessed, and any known training, behavioural or medical information will be discussed openly with prospective applicants. Placements are based on suitability rather than a first-come, first-served basis, and applicants may be asked to complete a home assessment and meet the dog before any decision is made.
Availability is limited and dogs will only be placed where we are satisfied that the environment, experience and lifestyle offered are right for them.
